Learnings From A Cape Le Grand Expedition

Cape Le Grand Expedition

There is a moment at the end of a long pack march where everything goes quiet. Not the kind of quiet you get from sitting still… The kind that comes after you’ve asked your body a serious question – and it’s finally answered.

This was 15km into Cape Le Grand. Steep and undulating. The kind of terrain that humbles you just enough to remind you who’s actually in charge. And somewhere along the way, Oléna decide she was done walking.

Fair enough. She was backing up a 20 kilometre march from the week prior, and her feet gave out 1km from the finish. So up she went – onto the shoulders.

Now, for context… I was already carrying a pack. Add a growing human with opinions, snacks and a phone she absolutely didn’t need at that moment, and suddenly this became less of a hike and more of a character-building exercise. But here’s the thing… I didn’t carry her because she couldn’t do it. I carried her because I could. And that’s the lesson. We don’t train, fuel and build resilience for the easy days. We do it for the moments when we’re called to carry more – physically, mentally and emotionally. Performance isn’t built in the moment. It’s revealed in it.

That day didn’t start at Cape Le Grand. It started weeks before – with how we fuel, how we hydrate and how we recover. Because if you’ve ever tried to ‘tough it out’ on empty… you already know how that ends. Not heroically. Usually somewhere between a cramp and a questionable life decision.

The Framework We Used

Nothing complicated – just effective.

Fuel That Works (not just looks healthy)

We used Maple Movement and KODA Nutrition gels throughout the march. Both clean endurance fuels designed to enter your bloodstream quickly, help keep your muscles energised and your mind on the task at hand. Because when you’re moving for hours, you need fast, usable energy, you need to protect your glycogen and you don’t want to be playing gut roulette halfway up a climb. Clean, efficient, no drama.

Hydration Is A Strategy

Electrolytes go in early and regularly. Not when you’re already cooked… before that. If your lips are dry and your mood is questionable, you’re already behind.

Recovery Is Where It Compounds

After the march, we don’t just hope the body bounces back. We support it. Our Invictus Longevity Stack is built for exactly this – replenishing minerals, supporting cellular repair and bringing the nervous system back down from survival mode. Because if you don’t recover properly, you’re not building capacity. You’re stacking fatigue – and that catches up with you.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t about a hike – it’s about capacity. It’s about building a body, and a life, that can carry what matters when it’s time. Your family. Your team. Your responsibilities. And sometimes… just a tired kid who trusted you enough to climb onto your shoulders.

We say it often, but it lands differently when you feel it: Do hard things. Not for the sake of it – but for who you become because of it. And if you’re going to do hard things… Fuel properly. Recover properly. Otherwise, you’re just making it harder than it needs to be.

Explore The Possibilities

If you’re ready to build that kind of capacity – in your performance, your recovery and your day-to-day – that’s exactly what we help people we do inside Invictus. No fluff. Just systems that work when it counts.
