We’ll Be Back
There’s something slightly unhinged about willingly stepping into the dark with a headlamp and a pack… and calling it a good idea. Midnight. Stirling Range. The kind of darkness that doesn’t just sit around you. It swallows everything beyond the beam. Just boots on the gravel. Breath in the cold air. And a quite understanding… That this is going to ask something of you.
Two Missions. Controlled Chaos.
We had our crew. Me. Nat. Tayla. Jarvis. Oléna. Willow.
Two missions running in parallel. Controlled chaos.
Mission One
We stepped off at midnight. Oléna, Jarvis and me. Chasing the ridgeline and a sunrise you can’t buy, borrow or fake. Jarvis… first time on the Stirling Ridge.
Now, most people show up dialled in. Fancy boots. Technical kit. Looking like they’ve read all the manuals. Jarvis, on the other hand, rolled in like he’d taken a wrong turn on the way to Bunnings. Work boots. Trackies. Camera in hand. Perfect.
But not once did he let the terrain, the exposure or the slow grind of that ridge take the edge off his excitement. Every rise. Every scramble – he was there for it. Not just surviving it… enjoying it. You could see it bubbling. That mix of “this is harder than I thought” and “this is exactly where I’m meant to be”
That’s grit. It’s not loud or dramatic. Just steady. Four days later, he’s still walking like he’s been in a bar fight with gravity… But he’ll be back. There’s absolutely no doubt about it.
Mission Two
While we were out there moving along the spine of the range in the dark, the second crew was playing a different game. The long wait. Nat. Tayla. Willow. Ten hours later, they stepped onto Bluff Knoll. 4 kilometres. 1100 metres of elevation. No shortcuts or hiding. Just up.
For Tayla and Willow, it was their first time. And they didn’t just get through it – they owned it. There’s a moment you see in people when they realise they’re capable of more than they’ve told themselves. It’s subtle. But it’s there. I saw it in both of them. They might’ve started the day as coming along for the climb… But I’d put money on it – they’ve caught the bug now.
Next time? They won’t be meeting us at the summit. They’ll be on the ridge. And Nat… Quietly doing the work behind the scenes. Hours on the bike. Sessions in the gym. Rucking through terrain that doesn’t negotiate. Fitness built the hard way. Carrying an injury up the Bluff as well – with no noise or excuses. Just got on with it. Leading her crew and making it look easier than it had any right to be.
That’s the kind of strength you can’t fake. It’s earned. Enormously proud of her.
The Convergence
Two crews. Two timelines. One summit. Lunch at altitude. Cold air, tired legs. And that shared look on everyone’s face… We did something here. Not just a hike – something that sits a little deeper.
What The Stirling’s Show You
The Stirling Range doesn’t hand anything out. It tests you. Quietly. Consistently. Relentlessly. And if you’re willing to lean into it… It will show you exactly who you are. And maybe… who you’re becoming. We’ll be back.
Build Towards Moments Like This
If you’re building towards moments like this – moments that ask for more of you than you thought you had – then how you train, fuel and recover starts to matter. Not just for performance. For what you’re capable of when it counts. We stock the fuels, supplements and recovery tools that serious people use when the terrain gets real. No filler or fluff. Just what works – sourced, tested and used by the people writing these stories.
If you’re ready to dial that in, the range is waiting for you. Explore the Invictus range or speak to our expert team.
